HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF periodontal disease? You might know it better as gum disease. Periodontal diseases are serious infections that attack teeth’s supportive structure: the attachment fibers and the bones holding your teeth in your mouth.
It’s a big deal. And what’s really crazy is that in the early stages, it can be invisible and hard to catch. But once it advances, periodontal disease results in swollen gums, mouth sores, and loose teeth. It can even contribute to heart disease!
Usually, It’s Caused By Plaque
Periodontal disease is usually caused by plaque, so good oral hygiene habits can prevent it. But other factors can put you at risk, as well. Things like pregnancy, diabetes, genetics, and stress increase your chances of infection.
If you’ve read other posts or chatted with us before about periodontal treatments, you might be intimidated. We know that some of the procedures sound really scary and invasive: soft tissue grafts? Don’t worry! You don’t have to deal with any of that if we can catch the infection early. During your regular checkups and cleanings, we always check for signs of gum disease, so make sure you don’t miss out on an appointment.
Early Or Advanced, We Can Help
If early signs of periodontal disease are found, we can handle it, and so can you. That’s why we offer non-surgical periodontal treatment. It’s called root scaling and planning, or deep cleaning. During deep cleaning, our professionals actually remove plaque and tartar from below your gum line– stuff that your toothbrush could never reach.
If you’re seeing any early signs of gum disease yourself (including red, swollen gums, bad breath, and shifting teeth), make sure to contact us for an appointment. We can stop it before it gets too advanced and spare you more invasive procedures.
Here at Dental Partners of Boston, we’re grateful to have you as a patient. If ever you have questions about our office, our team, or your own oral health, be sure to let us know.
