When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?

If you believe you may be facing a dental emergency, please give us a call. It may be important that you seek immediate medical attention, or come into the office at your earliest convenience but not necessarily right away. The following situations may constitute a dental emergency, but if you still have questions, please call us immediately!

If Your Tooth Aches or Goes Numb

If you’ve been experiencing toothache and then noticed that the tooth went numb, then it could be a sign that the bacteria have reached the root. When bacteria get to the root, they can attack the nerve that leads to the tooth. Damage to this nerve then numbs the tooth, suggesting that the infection has moved deeper. In other words, your tooth could be in worse shape than you thought.

If a tooth that’s been aching goes numb, then you need dental attention fast. You may have an abscess around the root next to the nerve that requires an emergency root canal.

If You Notice A Dental Abscess

A dental abscess typically forms around an infection. It is how the body attempts to fight and kill the harmful bacteria in your mouth. Abscesses can form close to a cavity or around a section of severely infected gum. You can also get them after trauma or an injury.

Abscesses are an immune reaction, so they’re often accompanied by other signs that your immune system is working overtime. Often patients have a foul taste in their mouth, swollen glands on the neck, and pus that regularly runs to the back of the mouth, irritating the throat.

Just like any other infection, it’s vital to deal with abscesses as quickly as possible. Infections can become more severe over time, causing further complications and, in extreme cases, toxic shock. Emergency dental care helps to relieve the pain from abscesses, fight the underlying infection, and remove the cause of the problem.

If Your Jaw Is Swollen

A swollen jaw combined with a painful or sensitive gum is usually the sign of a severe periodontal infection. Bacteria can get into pockets of loose gum around the teeth, multiply, and then provoke an immune response.

The body’s response, however, can sometimes be extreme, especially if the bacteria threaten to break into the blood supply. Patients can experience substantial, visible swelling of the jaw that protrudes so much that it’s evident from the outside.

A swollen jaw is a dental emergency. It suggests the presence of an infection that requires antibiotics to correct. Swollen jaws caused by periodontal disease can be extremely painful and prevent you from eating or sleeping. If your jaw is swollen, you need emergency treatment immediately.

If Your Gums Are Bleeding And Aching

A lot of people experience bleeding after brushing. But while this isn’t healthy, it’s not necessarily a sign of an emergency. What is a sign that something is seriously wrong, however, is if your gums bleed excessively and ache at the same time. These two factors, in combination, suggest severe gingivitis or gum disease.

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. It’s where bacteria damage the delicate surface of the gums, exposing the capillaries below. People with gingivitis can experience bleeding after brushing, but usually, this isn’t a medical emergency. What is an emergency, however, is if the bleeding is severe and the gums ache.

At Dental Partners of Boston, we don’t recommend waiting around for an appointment if your gums bleed excessively. Gum disease can develop into a much more serious periodontal infection that destroys both teeth and the jawbones that support them. If you believe you may have an infection, contact us as soon as possible.

If You Have A Loose Tooth (Or Loose Teeth)

Adults, generally speaking, should never experience loose teeth. You shouldn’t be able to wobble your tooth, for instance, with your finger. Your teeth should feel like they’re firmly held in place by root, bone, and gum.

Sometimes, though, a tooth can come loose. The most common cause in younger adults is an injury. If you’ve suffered a facial injury and now have a loose tooth, you must visit us immediately to help save the tooth and prevent infection from developing around the gum.

Localized infection can also lead to loose teeth. Both infections around the root and caries can cause a tooth to break free of the gum, radically increasing the chance of tooth loss. By booking an emergency appointment with Dental Partners of Boston, you can improve the likelihood that you’ll be able to keep the tooth and deal with the underlying problem too.

If You Feel Exceptionally Tired And Have Experienced Tooth Or Gum Pain

Harmful bacteria that live in the mouth are expert survivors. Not only can they resist attack from the body’s immune system, but many species can live under the teeth, without a supply of oxygen.

Unfortunately, these microorganisms are not benign. If left to their own devices, they begin to break down the body’s tissue, leading to pain. Chronic tooth infections can over-activate the immune system. While the body can sustain a fight for a week or a month, doing it indefinitely is a drain on resources and can make you feel fatigued.

Extreme fatigue could be a sign that there’s a severe lingering bacterial infection in your mouth that you need to address. Emergency treatment allows you to ascertain whether there is an infection in your mouth, or rule it out as a possible cause of your tiredness.

People like to think of oral health as being something entirely contained within the mouth. But just like every other structure in the body, the mouth connects to many tissues and organs. Many people with oral health issues experience headaches, but some headaches can be severe, especially if you have an infection in your upper jaw.

Infections in the upper jaw can easily migrate into the brain, leading to feelings of sluggishness, and putting the health of the brain at risk. If you experience toothache accompanied by a sudden, severe headache, then you may need treatment fast. At Dental Partners of Boston, we investigate the issue thoroughly and then provide you with medication to eliminate the infection. We may also schedule additional appointments to deal with any underlying oral health issues.

How did you hear about us?

    Emergency Dental Care We Offer

At Dental Partners of Boston, we provide a comprehensive range of emergency dental care services, helping to restore your oral health as rapidly as possible.

    Tooth Reattachment

Dental Partners of Boston offers tooth reattachment treatment if you’ve lost a tooth due to injury or trauma. The way that tooth reattachment works are simple. We take the tooth that’s been knocked out and use either wire or bonding material to fix it back in place. We investigate the socket of the tooth and readjust it as necessary.

Adult teeth usually take around eight weeks to reattach themselves. In most cases, the tooth reattaches with the surrounding bone and gum and is retained for life.

The nerve of the tooth, however, can sometimes die as a result of the trauma. You may, therefore, need root canal treatment to prevent the soft, fleshy interior of the tooth from becoming infected.

    Antibiotics And Flap Surgery

Severe periodontal infections are usually the result of deep pockets at the side of the gums caused by a previous bacterial infection. The gum cannot form what dentists call a “collar” around the tooth, allowing food particles to get below the gumline regularly.

While good oral hygiene can prevent bleeding gums and gum recession, flaps tend to persist. If you have a severe periodontal infection, therefore, you may need emergency flap surgery and a course of antibiotics.

    Dental Bonding

Fractured and chipped teeth are not only a cosmetic issue but if left untreated, they can affect the rest of your mouth. Dental bonding is a special technique that restores teeth to their original appearance.

A dental bonding agent is a kind of putty that, when dried, mimics the appearance of natural teeth. The great thing about dental bonding is that it can be molded into any shape, allowing us to fix all kinds of cosmetic issues in your mouth. It’s also great for repairing teeth in emergencies because it’s so quick and can be applied by hand.

    Root Canals

If you have a severe toothache, it could be a sign that you have a root canal infection. Root canal infections can become increasingly painful over time until they destroy the tooth from the inside out.

An emergency root canal is a necessary treatment that can eliminate pain and infection, and get you back on the road to health. It works by removing all of the infected material in the root canal and replacing it with artificial material through a small hole. At the end of the root canal, we replace the crown, having eliminated the infection.

    Crown and Dental Implant Refitting

Dental Crowns and even dental implants can occasionally come loose and require refitting. Here at Dental Partners of Boston, we can refit your crowns and implants if they become loose or fall out. This prevents gaps in your teeth and the spread of infection.

What You Need To Remember When Getting Emergency Dental Care

If you need emergency dental care, here are some rules of thumb to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

First, arrive at your appointment a few minutes beforehand. Emergency appointments usually slot in at the first available opportunity that we have to see you. Sometimes we will rearrange our schedule to take care of you.

Next, bring your insurance information – you may need to fill out forms.

Finally, if you’re in severe pain, find somebody willing to drive you to the clinic or book a transportation service. If sedation is involved during treatment, you may not be able to drive yourself home.

What To Expect During A Dental Emergency Visit

The nature of your emergency dental appointment will vary according to the kind of treatment that you need. At Dental Partners of Boston, we first assess your mouth to determine the likely problem. We then prescribe medication accordingly to both eliminate pain and deal with the source of the problem.

If you have severely infected gums, for instance, we may scale the area around the gum, remove any plaque and prescribe a course of antibiotics to remove the infection. If you have a chipped, broken, or damaged too, then we will begin repair work immediately, helping to restore it to its natural appearance.

Emergency Dental Care – Call Us Immediately!

We advise all patients who believe that they are experiencing a dental emergency to contact us as soon as possible. We endeavor to see all dental emergencies as quickly as we can. We’re open weekdays from 7 am until 4:30 pm and are ready and waiting to take your call, whenever you need us.

Dealing with a dental emergency sooner rather than later is always the best policy. Infections become worse, and teeth become more difficult to restore the longer you delay making your appointment. You could cause damage to other parts of your body as well if it’s left untreated.

Call us immediately and schedule your emergency appointment as soon as possible! The entire team of Dental Partners of Boston looks forward to helping you!
