What Are Dental X-Rays?
A dental X-ray is a diagnostic imaging tool that captures detailed images of a patient’s teeth, mouth, and jaw to aid the dentist in assessing the condition of the soft tissues, bones, and teeth. This imaging technique enables the dentist to identify oral health issues that may not be visible during a routine examination, such as cavities and impacted wisdom teeth. Traditional dental X-rays rely on outdated film methods. However, Dental Partners of Boston employs a more advanced digital X-ray technology with several advantages over conventional film X-rays.
Specifically, our digital X-ray machines offer the following benefits:
- Instantaneous results enable our dentists to review images immediately, resulting in more efficient appointments for our patients.
- The ability to save images electronically for convenient referencing at a later time.
- Digital X-rays can be magnified to reveal intricate details that may not be visible on film X-rays.
- Significantly lower radiation exposure, with digital X-ray machines emitting 50% less radiation than traditional film X-rays.
Is a Dental X-Ray Right for You?
Our dentists commonly use dental X-rays to diagnose patients’ oral health, particularly where our doctors suspect an oral health concern. However, we advise patients who are pregnant or suspect they may be pregnant to refrain from having an X-ray unless absolutely necessary. In such cases, we take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both mother and child by providing appropriate shielding. We also periodically recommend that our patients have new X-rays taken to assess any changes in their oral health. Dental X-rays are useful in diagnosing and addressing the following issues:
How Are Dental X-Rays Performed?
At Dental Partners of Boston, dental X-rays are conducted on-site at one of our Boston offices. Our skilled dental technicians take all necessary precautions to ensure patient safety during the procedure, including covering the patient with a heavy lead apron to protect the body.
Unlike traditional X-ray film, we use advanced digital X-rays that rely on an electronic sensor. After placing the sensor, our dental technicians take multiple X-ray images by repositioning the sensor to capture different areas of the patient’s mouth.
