It’s no secret that cavities are a big problem in the United States. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90% of adults have had at least one cavity in their lives! This is why it’s important to take steps to avoid cavities and keep your smile healthy.
This article provides four helpful tips for keeping your teeth healthy and cavity-free!
What are Cavities?
Cavities, also known as dental caries, are a type of tooth decay that occurs when plaque and bacteria build up on the teeth and break down the enamel. This can lead to pain, sensitivity, and eventually, tooth loss. Cavities also put you at risk for other serious health problems, like infections and gum disease.
4 Ways to Avoid Cavities
While cavities can be a serious problem, there are steps you can take to avoid them. Here are four tips for keeping your smile healthy and cavity-free:
#1: Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
Brushing your teeth is one of the best ways to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, using a toothbrush with soft bristles.
If you can, brush after every meal or snack. This will help remove any food particles that may be stuck on your teeth and reduce the amount of time that plaque has to build up. Moreover, be sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride, as this will help strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.
#2: Floss Your Teeth Daily
Flossing is another important step in preventing cavities. When you floss, you remove plaque and bacteria from between your teeth and along your gum line – places where your toothbrush can’t reach. Be sure to floss at least once a day, using a clean, unused piece of floss for each tooth.
To floss properly, wrap the floss around each tooth in a C-shape and gently slide it up and down along the side of the tooth. Be sure to floss under the gum line as well, since this is where cavities are most likely to form.
#3: Eat a Healthy Diet
What you eat can also impact your risk for cavities. A diet high in sugar, for example, can increase the amount of plaque on your teeth and lead to cavities. To avoid this, eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Additionally, limit sugary snacks and drinks, as well as acidic foods like citrus fruits and tomatoes.
#4: See Your Dentist Regularly
Finally, it’s important to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. During these appointments, your dentist will examine your teeth for any signs of decay or damage and remove any plaque or tartar that has built up on your teeth. They can also help you identify any areas where you may be at risk for cavities and provide tips for preventing them.
