If you have symptoms of periodontal disease, you might be wondering what you need to do to save your teeth and improve your oral health. The best option is to reduce the infection before it gets worse. And, if you are dealing with a more severe level of infection, you might be eligible for a minimally invasive treatment we offer called LANAP. LANAP stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, and it involves using an FDA-approved laser that is safe and does not use incisions or sutures as traditional periodontal surgery does.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease starts with inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. Gingivitis happens when plaque and tartar build-up and bacteria irritate the gums. This causes red, swollen gums that easily bleed when brushed or flossed. Luckily, gingivitis is reversible by having good oral hygiene habits. If gingivitis is not treated, it will progress to periodontitis.

Periodontitis leads to gums loosening from the teeth and leaving pockets that fill with infection. During this stage, gums and the bones around the teeth can begin to deteriorate which can cause teeth to loosen or fall out.

What is LANAP?

When periodontal disease progresses to a stage where it is threatening teeth and the supporting structures, periodontal surgery can prevent further damage. LANAP is an alternative to traditional surgery methods. LANAP uses a laser that targets the infected tissue and doesn’t damage the healthy tissue. It also doesn’t involve sutures and incisions like the traditional method. That method of periodontal surgery can also do damage to healthy tissue. LANAP in comparison takes fewer sessions to complete and allows for a quicker recovery.

How do you know if LANAP is right for you?

This procedure is a safe option for most of our patients who have periodontal disease. Even if you have health issues or are pregnant, this surgery is safe. If you have periodontal disease and are considering periodontal surgery, this option could be right for you.

Our Periodontist Dr. Guzman will be happy to discuss your individual case and talk about options with you.
