What Are Immediate Dental Implants?

An example of an Immediate dental implant in the case of a dental emergency

Many people put off getting dental implants for a variety of reasons. However, with the development of immediate implants, many of those who need dental implants are now able to get them. With immediate placement dental implants, also known as same day dental implants, our doctors are able to remove an infected tooth or teeth and install the dental implant immediately after. This procedure requires the expertise and experience of a dental implant specialist. Oral surgeons are usually the ones that perform the tooth extraction in immediate placement scenarios so they can ensure that enough bone structure is preserved during the extraction so that they are able to place the new dental implant immediately.

Why Should You Consider Immediate Implants?

First and foremost, the advantage of immediate dental implant placement is for you as a patient to undergo only one surgical procedure;  extraction of the tooth and installation of the dental implant in one visit.

  • Ability to preserve the original bone- This factor is critical since lack of bone in the area prevents dentists from positioning the dental implant in the most accurate position. By placing a dental implant immediately after an extraction has been performed, we are able to preserve the bone within the jaw, therefore eliminating the need to perform costly and time consuming bone-grafting procedures.
  • Save time and money- Traditional procedures for dental implants require months of visits to reach a completed process. This process may add unnecessary time and cost for you. The duration of the entire immediate placement treatment is drastically shorter and and requires far less of your time, not to mention a much smoother recovery process.

What Are Some Disqualifying Factors?

Having a tooth that needs to be pulled because it is infected may be one of the main reasons to avoid placing immediate dental implants. Lack of adequate bone density at the extraction site may prevent accurate placement of dental implants. In this case, the bone-grafting procedure will be performed before dental implant placement. On rare instances, there may be a suspicious lesion in the area needing a biopsy. It may be advised to postpone dental implant placement in this situation.

What To Expect In The Office And In Recovery

Extraction of a tooth and placement of an immediate dental implant may take 30-60 minutes.

The procedure may be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The typical dental implants process takes three to six months and requires a bit of care and time. But with immediate dental implants, you are not needed to wait very long.  You may get a temporary crown attached on the very same day, and then you need to visit your dentist about 3-6 month later to get a permanent tooth.

Foods You Should Plan On Avoiding During Recovery

Sticky foods and especially candies should be avoided, even healthy options like apples, carrots, radishes or anything hard should be avoided. The implant needs to integrate into the jaw, and the pressure from chewing such foods can compromise integration.
