CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, plaque and tartar are not exactly the same! Here at Dental Partners of Boston, we’d like to debunk some popular myths and remind you why professional cleanings are so important.
You Can Treat Plaque At Home
Plaque is the film of bacteria constantly forming on your teeth. It is always growing: after you eat, while you sleep, in pleasant conversation–all the time.
The good thing is that you can treat your own plaque. Most of the plaque on your teeth can be removed when you brush your teeth and floss. The bad news is that it never stops developing, so it is important to be consistent in your teeth brushing and flossing.
Tartar Is A Little Bit More Tricky
Tartar is the leftover plaque on your teeth combined with additional bacteria, and your saliva. This creates a hard mineral deposit on your teeth, which acts as a breeding ground for other bacteria. Excessive tartar may lead to periodontal disease and other dangerous conditions.
Tartar is tricky because at-home brushing and flossing cannot get rid of it. You need the help of a professional. It can only be removed by your dentist or dental hygienist.
Keep Up Your Daily Habits, And Remember Your Six-Month Cleanings
Of course you can take preventative measures. Brushing for 2 minutes twice daily and flossing regularly will keep the plaque down and prevent tartar.
But remember, it’s still important you see your dentist every 6 months. No one can perfectly rid themselves of plaque every time they brush their teeth. There will be a little bit of tartar buildup. Regularly seeing our team keeps it under control and saves you from problems down the road.
