What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that a dentist places over a compromised tooth that has suffered decay or injury. The crown matches the appearance of the tooth and restores its strength and size.

Dental crowns are an effective treatment option for patients at Dental Partners of Boston. Crowns help protect your teeth from damage and restore full function and a natural-looking smile. While dental crowns can be made from different materials, all-porcelain dental crowns have some additional benefits. Take a minute to learn more about why all-porcelain dental crowns are better, how the procedure is performed, and the great service Dental Partners of Boston offers.

Why Choose All-Porcelain Dental Crowns?

In many dental offices, dentists offer the option of metal and metal/porcelain dental crowns. However, the team at Dental Partners of Boston prefers pure porcelain due to many advantages, including:

  • They blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
  • They have less of a chance of causing allergic reactions.
  • There is no chance of metal showing at the base of the crown, as sometimes happens with metal/porcelain.
  • Our technology for creating porcelain crowns allows us to complete the procedure in one visit.
  • All-porcelain dental crowns offer similar strength and toughness to other dental crowns.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

In many cases, dental crowns directly follow other procedures such as root canals or cavity removal. Once we determine a dental crown is the best option for you, your dentist will prepare the tooth for the crown. A digital scan of your mouth helps our dentists precisely measure the size and shape of the crown. In some cases, other teeth near the crown might be altered in order to ensure proper alignment. After the dentist has taken all measurements the crown is made. Once the crown is ready, we bond it with your existing tooth structure.

FAQs

What are the advantages of porcelain crowns over metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns?

Porcelain crowns offer better translucency and a more natural look than PFM or metal crowns. They are also metal-free, making them a good choice for people with metal allergies or sensitivities.

How long do all-porcelain crowns last?

With proper care, porcelain crowns last around 15 years, but with good care, they can last up to 20 or even 30 years or longer. Good oral hygiene and avoiding habits like grinding or chewing on hard objects can help extend their lifespan.

Are porcelain crowns strong enough for back teeth?

While porcelain crowns are most commonly used on front teeth, newer ceramics offer improved strength. For patients with strong bites or teeth grinding issues, your dentist may recommend zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-zirconia for molars.

What is the procedure for getting a porcelain crown?

With our technology, the process usually involves only one visit. These are the steps in the procedure:
X-rays: Your dentist will X-ray your mouth to determine the degree of damage to the affected tooth and the surrounding area.
Numbing the tooth and gums: Before placing a crown, the dentist will numb the gum tissue and the affected tooth using local anesthesia to prevent discomfort (we also offer sedation dentistry).
Filing and shaping the tooth: To allow for a perfect fit, the dentist will shape and file the tooth.
Placing the crown: Your dentist will place the crown over the natural tooth and secure it firmly using dental adhesive.

Is the porcelain crown procedure painful?

The procedure is typically not painful. Local anesthesia is used during preparation, and any post-treatment sensitivity is usually mild and short-lived.

Do porcelain crowns stain over time?

Porcelain is highly resistant to staining. However, maintaining good oral hygiene and limiting staining foods and drinks can help preserve its appearance.

How much do porcelain crowns cost in Boston?

Costs vary depending on the complexity of the case and whether the crown is part of a larger treatment plan. On average, porcelain crowns in Boston may range from $1,200 to $2,000. Dental insurance may cover part of the cost if the crown is medically necessary.

Will insurance cover my porcelain crown?

Many dental insurance plans provide full or partial coverage for crowns that are needed to restore function or protect a damaged tooth. Cosmetic-only cases may not be covered. Our team is happy to help verify your benefits.

How should I care for my porcelain crown?

Care for your crown like a natural tooth:
Brush and floss daily
Avoid chewing on hard items (like ice or pens)
Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams
