Don’t Be Fooled By These Oral-Cancer Myths

ABOUT 42,000 AMERICANS will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. That number has continuously risen in the last five years, and doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.

As your trusted Boston dentist, we’re taking defense against oral cancer seriously, and that’s why we want you to be well-educated about the facts of oral cancer. Don’t fall for these three common misunderstandings:

Myth #1: Regular Dental Check-ups Aren’t That Important

Regular check-ups for our patients always include oral cancer screening. Early detection is the key to beating oral cancer, so make sure not to skip this important health screening.

Myth #2: Lingering Sores In Your Mouth Are Nothing To Worry About

Canker sores and cold sores are irritants, and they go away after a couple of weeks. If ever you have a sore that DOESN’T go away after a couple of weeks, please give us a call, or consult your physician. Oral cancer’s first signs are small red or white sores on the cheeks, gums, or tongue.

Myth #3: Oral Cancer Only Affects Elderly Smokers

The most well-known risk factors for oral cancer are smoking, drinking, and old age. However, the fastest-growing demographic of oral cancer patients are 20-something non-smokers.

More recent research is showing a major correlation between HPV and oral cancer. There are other risk factors and correlations that we don’t even know about yet. The lesson here is that oral cancer screening is important for EVERYONE, whatever your age or habits.
