Proper Emergency Action Can Help Save A Knocked Out Tooth

DENTAL EMERGENCIES happen. If tooth trauma happens to you, our team here at Dental Partners of Boston wants to be sure you feel prepared. That’s why we’re using this post to share some tips on what you can do to help save a knocked out tooth.

A Tooth Can Be Saved If You Act Quickly And Properly

It’s possible for a knocked out tooth to be “replanted”, but it requires that certain prompt actions be taken. If your tooth is completely knocked out, consider the following:

  • First and foremost, try your very best to stay calm.
  • Recover the tooth (or fragments) of the tooth. To prevent damage, grab the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the roots.
  • Do your best to insert the tooth back into the socket. Bite down on gauze or use your finger to hold it in place. Gauze is helpful if the socket is bleeding.
  • If you can’t get it back in the socket, submerge and keep the tooth in milk, saline solution, or your own spit. Don’t scrub, clean, or place the tooth in water.
  • Contact us and let us know what’s happening!
  • Wherever you go for help (our office, the emergency room), go quickly but safely.
  • For safety reasons, a responsible adult should transfer the knocked out tooth of a child.
